The ignition key on the 03-11 SAAB isn't very durable. The buttons are susceptible to falling out and get stuck. If you're down to one working ignition key you must make another one as soon as you can, to avoid any problems.
Lockouts
Saab owners must always have a spare key as it's much simpler to replace keys that are lost or stolen. If you lose just one key, it's an entirely different story. It's expensive to get another key and requires the dealer installing and programming the new TWICE Module (Column Integration Module on older vehicles) as well as an OEM key that is brand new (not purchased from Amazon or eBay).
If you're experiencing problems with your remote control keys not locking or unlocking your car, you need to check for several possible causes. The most common is a dead coin battery in the key fob, but it could be caused by damaged buttons, water damage, signal interference or receiver module issues.
If the issue persists after having tried all of these options, you can try reprogramming the ignition key. This is done by changing (in reverse Hex) the number count to zero in the ECU. In order to do this, you need to get access to the case of your car key fob. This can be accomplished by removing your emergency key from the fob. You can then use a flathead to remove the fob's casing and expose the battery. Be careful when opening the case and avoid pouring or dropping any liquids into the fob because they could damage the electronic components within.

Every Saab since 1995 is required to have an immobilizer within the vehicle. This makes it nearly impossible to steal your car without a unique key. The key requires a specific transponder inside it to turn on the engine and open your doors. The key also needs a transmitter/transponder chip that needs to be matched with the car's computer module in order to work. This can only be done by dealers using a specific tool called Tech-2 or a similar program.

Replacement
Saab owners from 1994 and up are advised to keep two working keys for their car. Replacing a single key is expensive and difficult. The dealer will have to replace both the CIM (Column Integration module) or TWICE, depending on the model. They will also need to program the key to work with the new module. Claimed-new key from aftermarket sellers is usually not properly initialized, and will not program correctly when you need of one.
It is not unusual for the battery in the key fob to wear down after a couple of years of use, specifically when it is used frequently for locking and unlocking the car. Fortunately that replacing the battery in the majority of SAAB 9-3 key fob models is simple and does not require any special tools.
A mobile SAAB locksmith is usually able to complete this for 75% less than what a dealer would charge for the same service. A locksmith will not have to replace the computer in the car, and will usually re-program your existing EEPROM to accept the new key. This can save you lots of money as a brand new car computer is costly. This is why it makes sense to contact an emergency SAAB locksmith whenever you need an extra key fob to your car.
